Make a driftwood photo hanger

This driftwood photo hanger is really easy to make and is a great way to display your beach photos!

What you will need:

  • A piece of driftwood

  • Some shells with holes

  • Coloured thread

  • Small pegs

  • Photos

What you need to do:

This project starts in the best way - with a trip to the beach! Have a look for a suitably-sized piece of driftwood and some holey shells. (Please do check the beach signage as taking shells is prohibited on some beaches. Note that also, under the Coastal Protection Act of 1949, removing pebbles from public beaches is illegal.)

Clean your driftwood with a slightly damp cloth and let it dry.

Tie a piece of thread around each end of the driftwood for it to hang from. Then wrap some more thread around each hanging point, tie a small knot at the bottom, and leave enough thread dangling to hang your photos and shells. You’ll need to leave about 1 1/2 times the final length you want to take into account that you’ll be wrapping the thread around each shell.

Depending on the size of your driftwood, you can add some more hanging points, perhaps using different coloured thread.

Now you can start tying your shells and pegs to the thread. I wrapped the thread a few times around each shell, tied a small knot, and then took the thread round the back of the shell to the bottom before tying again. I like the look of the thread running through the shells but, if you prefer, you can just cut the the thread after you have tied the first knot.

To tie the pegs, take the thread through the coil of the spring a couple of times and then tie a knot.

Carry on tying your shells and pegs until you are happy with your hanger. Remember to leave enough space underneath the pegs for your photos.

Display somewhere you’d like to be reminded of the beach!
